Hi, I’m Lucy, a birth and postnatal doula covering Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and parts of the New Forest and Southampton. I’m also mama to two tiny humans and I guess the main thing you need to know about me is that I believe in birth. I believe we are wise, magic, powerful, and I believe that birthing in that truth is transformative. Walking with women and birthing humans during such a transformative time is my calling. Birth matters, you matter, and it would be my total honour to hold space for you at this special time.
As a doula I follow the continuum approach. This means my focus is on developing a strong connection with you and your family so that you all feel truly comfortable. In the lead up to your birth we will aim to meet five times. These meet ups may include popping for a cuppa (read cake), heading for a beach stroll, attending appointments, spending time talking about your birth plan – whatever works best for you. I will then attend your birth (provided that feels right for you – your birth space is sacred!) and lovingly hold the space, gently supporting you in your power. During the postpartum period I will visit with you a further five times to ensure your early parenting weeks are about thriving not merely surviving. During these visits I can come alongside you with any tasks that are feeling daunting, pop a load of washing on, give the sides a wipe, hold your baby while you have a nap if that feels helpful, and make sure you are well nourished. Perhaps most importantly during these visits we can talk – talk about your birth, parenthood, feeding, how you’re feeling…whatever is on your mind. I can also provide support to the rest of your family during this time by spending time talking and/or playing, or by freeing you up to do so. Oh and I love a stretchy wrap and a cloth nappy, so can absolutely provide pointers if you plan on using either.
As well as a doula, I am also an independent hypnobirthing and antenatal education practitioner and can weave hypnobirthing into our time together if that feels good for you.
In terms of feeding support, I am an experienced breastfeeding mother and so offer support in the traditional way it always would have been offered…passed from mother to mother in the community. If further feeding support is needed I will signpost you to local experts.
